Imagine Learning announced today that Dr. Marc Liebman, former superintendent of Berryessa Union School District and principal education consultant for IBM, will join the company as chief academic officer.

In his new role, Liebman will serve as a curriculum expert, overseeing instructional design and product strategy for the award-winning Imagine Learning English software. He will also represent the company as an ambassador to education leaders around the world.

“Marc brings on-the-ground experience and expertise in using technology in the classroom,” said Imagine Learning CEO Susan Preator. “His efforts and vision will be invaluable as we expand the ways we help schools and districts provide a quality education to all students.”

Liebman said he is excited to join Imagine Learning at a time when one of the nation’s top priorities is closing the achievement gap.

“Imagine Learning is an organization that is dedicated to helping English learners, struggling readers, students with disabilities and early childhood education students cultivate literacy and succeed in school and beyond,” he said. “Imagine Learning English teaches not only key literacy skills but also the academic language that will help students thrive in all subject areas. Our software program provides teachers with a powerful tool to successfully meet the needs of all their students.”

Liebman brings more than 38 years of experience to his new position. He most recently worked in the Berryessa Union School District in San Jose, California. During his six years as superintendent there, API/AYP scores increased by 10 percent. Liebman also restructured the district’s English learner programs to improve student achievement, and in 2010, English learners in Berryessa Union School District were recognized as the eighth-highest achieving in California.

Liebman has also worked as a teacher, principal, deputy superintendent, and superintendent in various school districts throughout California. He holds a doctorate in educational administration from the University of California, Santa Barbara, and a master’s in education from Pacific Oaks College in Pasadena, California.
