David Klein, the inventor of the Jelly Belly®, jelly bean and creator of the gourmet jelly bean industry, announces plans for a nationwide media tour to publicize his acclaimed documentary about his life (Candyman: The David Klein Story), and to dispel the claims in the media by The Jelly Belly® Company of his historical role as Jelly Belly® Inventor.
Mr. Klein plans to schedule interviews and guest appearances with major TV, radio, print and social media over the next three months to defend his name and reputation after the true factual story of how he lost his candy empire came out in his documentary. “It’s sad but true how they tricked me into selling my company,” Klein says of the Jelly Belly® Company based in Northern California. “Now they’re spreading false rumors about me and trying to ruin my reputation. I deserve more than that from them,” Klein goes on to say.
For years, Klein was the unknown inventor of the Jelly Belly®, arguably the most important candy created in the last 40 years. He invented the whole new segment of “Gourmet Jelly Beans” but still receives no credit for his invention from The Jelly Belly® Company according to ‘Candyman: The David Klein Story’ documentary. 64-year old Klein now runs a modest candy factory in Covina, CA overseen by his daughter Roxanne.
“How can a guy create the greatest candy in the last 40 years, have it all taken away from him, and have himself totally erased from the product history?” Klein says. “At least when Colonel Sanders sold Kentucky Fried Chicken, he still had his face on every bucket!” Klein emphatically explains regarding his lost legacy.
“It’s such an amazing story,” Ellia Kassoff the CEO of Leaf Bands says. "When I saw David’s movie, I said to myself, everyone in the world can identify with him since we’ve all been taken advantage of at one point in our life and his story resonates so well with me. David and I work well together because we think alike and helping him to finally realize success is one of our goals. Why a company like Jelly Belly® refuses to even acknowledge David in any way is beyond comprehension. If it were me, I would hold a national holiday for David at our factory to celebrate what he did for us. It’s simple greed and ego on the part of The Jelly Belly Company, what else could it be?” Kassoff ends.
After noticing that The Jelly Belly® Company has contacted many in the press trying to discredit Klein, he has decided to take his story directly to the worldwide press. “Two articles in particular really make me mad,” Klein says. “For The Jelly Belly® Company to contact TIME Magazine and others, including The Long Island Press, telling them they only had a ‘brief informal relationship with me 30 years ago’ is a total lie! We’re just happy at least The Long Island Press took the false article off their site after we sent them our actual press release, detailing the correct information."
David’s Signature, ‘Beyond Gourmet’ Jelly Beans™, are off to a good start. “We’re taking pre-orders from around the world because of all the press,” Kassoff says.
“David’s new line of beans will be priced a little higher than other gourmet jelly beans since ours will have the best ingredients in the world. Himalayan Sea Salt, Habanero chili, real fruits and spices are some examples. We want the consumer to take a trip around the world by eating our jelly beans,” Ellia continues. “We even created the world’s most expensive jelly beans, using gold-leaf and Saffron, encased in a crystal candy dish for $500. The gold beans were only meant to draw attention to our line and see how far we can take something like a jelly bean. It worked, didn’t it?”
David’s Sweet New Venture
David’s Signature ‘Beyond Gourmet’ Jelly Beans™ are meant to create a new segment in the jellybean space, allowing people to create, “flavor sensations” in your mouth and the foodies are excited, Klein says. “I started to look at getting back in the jelly bean business, and I decided to move up a level and call my new beans, “Beyond Gourmet,” using the best ingredients in the world.”
Klein can’t help but chuckle as he reads the many articles written about his new line of jelly beans. In the last couple of weeks, he’s gone though every emotion over the last 30 years. The documentary about his life, 'Candyman: The David Klein Story', has garnered lots of attention. Press about his new ‘Beyond Gourmet' signature line of jelly beans has gone worldwide including the front page of The Los Angeles Times, titled: “Jelly Belly creator sour over lost legacy but sees sweet future,” as well as the Seattle Times, Huffington Post, New York Daily News, KFI News Radio (30 Minute segment during morning drive time) and TIME Magazine on-line.
