In 1866 two U.S. Army African American regiments were formed; the 9th and 10th cavalries. Members of these two cavalry units and two all-black infantry regiments, the 24th and 25th, came to be called Buffalo Soldiers. By 1867, the first Buffalo Soldier units were sent to the West to fight Indians and protect settlers, cattle herds, and railroad crews. In the 1950s, Buffalo Soldier regiments were disbanded when all military services were integrated.
Today, the San Diego Chapter Buffalo Soldiers – 9th and 10th Cavalry Association is a 501 (c)(3) non-profit organization that helps in educating the public about the existence of the Buffalo Soldiers while preserving, promoting and perpetuating the history, tradition and outstanding contributions of the Buffalo Soldiers toward the development and defense of the United States of America. The Honorary Membership given to Mr. Sheppard is a result of the contributions that Mr. Sheppard’s non-profit organization has made to homeless veterans in San Diego, CA.
“As the President of the 9th & 10 (Horse) Cavalry Association Buffalo Soldiers San Diego Chapter we are honored to give, Sean Sheppard, the Honorary Member Award because of his distinguished service to the veteran homeless community,” said Trooper Carl Wright. In addition, Mr. Sheppard’s organization, EMBRACE, has provided financial support to the Veterans Village San Diego as well as The Buffalo Soldiers, and mobilizes college students to provide food, clothes and blankets several days per week to homeless veteran’s living in the streets of San Diego.
Sean Sheppard is the founder of EMBRACE a 501(c) (3) nonprofit organization built on the philosophy that serving less fortunate members of civilian and veteran communities brings people together – irrespective of their race, religion, or cultural upbringing. EMBRACE programs are designed to connect college student volunteers to San Diego’s multi-cultural communities in the areas of social and physical wellness through service-learning and social justice activities.
