Some of the top Kickers in Tennessee are converging in Nashville, Tennessee in July to work with Tennessee Kicking Coach James Wilhoit

Some of the top Kickers in Tennessee are converging on July 9th at Moss Wright Park in Goodlettsville, Tennessee, to attend a kicking camp with Tennessee Kicking Coach James Wilhoit.

Wilhoit, who was the 2nd all-time leading scorer in University of Tennessee, and who last year trained over 130 kicking specialists across Tennessee, says this camp is a culmination of a year-long training program with these kickers.

“The kickers will be doing a competition and a test to reveal their mastery of kicking,” says Wilhoit. “Kickers from many top universities will be in attendance including the kickers from Southern Miss, Louisville, MTSU, Memphis, Arkansas State, Austin Peay, Carson Newman, and UT-Martin.”

Kickers like Corey Acosta, who recently signed a full scholarship to Southern Miss. Acostat says he attributes much of his kicking success to Wilhoit. “James has coached me ever since my sophomore year of high school,” says Acosta. Adding, “I have learned so much from him over the years and he was one of the main reasons I got a scholarship at Southern Miss. I will continue to work with him so I eventually can compete for a job in the NFL”

Wilhoit, who over the last few years has trained with some of the most highly respected kicking coaches in the country, including Coach Bill Renner and Coach Gary Zauner, says it’s important to him to work with dedicated and talented high school and college kickers to help them be at the top of their game. Wilhoit says he also want to help them secure scholarships at colleges of their choice.

“When I started training kickers and punters three years ago, I was frustrated that kicking specialists were not getting the proper technique work and exposure,” says Wilhoit. “I wanted to do something to change that.”

Wilhoit says part of his frustration stemmed from the fact that when he graduated from college, he was not ready for the opportunity he was given by the Baltimore Ravens to play professional football.

“It was unfortunate that I didn't capitalize on my opportunity at playing professional football,” says Wilhoit. “I truly believe with better coaching I would be playing in the NFL right now.”

But Wilhoit has not given up his dream, and he has been training for the last seven months with Coach Bill Renner to make professional football team. “I am optimistic of my chances as a PRO kicker,” says Wilhoit. “I’ve shown over the last few Kicking Combines I’ve attended, that I can compete with any kicker in the country.”

Wilhoit says right now he has the best of both worlds; training to play professional football, and coaching up and coming kickers.

“I am training with Bill Renner, who I consider the best kicking coach in the country, and I have a great job coaching kicking specialists here in Tennessee,” says Wilhoit. “It just doesn’t get much better!”

Wilhoit says he is looking forward to working with the kickers who are coming to his July camp so he can help them achieve the same success he has. And perhaps, for kickers like Corey Acosta, even more.

Wilhoit will be conducting a few more kicking camps in Tennessee over the course of the summer. His next kicking camp will be held next weekend. Wilhoit will be working with Freshman on July 16th and Sophomores and Juniors on July 17th
