Hughey & Phillips, LLC, a global leader in the engineering and manufacture of aviation obstruction lighting systems, has reached a new height in illuminating flagpoles. A Hughey & Phillips Medium Intensity Dual Lighting System was installed in May on the world’s tallest unsupported flagpole in Dushanbe, Tajikistan, which stands 165 meters (541 feet) above the Palace of Nations.
Hughey & Phillips lighting systems now provide aviation safety atop the world’s six highest unsupported flagpoles, as documented by Guinness World Records™. This feat has been accomplished in partnership with lead contractor Trident Support Corporation of San Diego, the world’s leading expert in the design, manufacture, integration and installation of record-breaking monumental flagpoles.
The new flagpole in Tajikistan is slightly taller than the replica of the Eiffel Tower at Paris Las Vegas casino, and about half the height of the original landmark in Paris. It flies a 30- by 60-meter (98.4- by 196.8-foot) Tajikistan national flag.
The Hughey & Phillips FG3000B Medium Intensity Dual Lighting System consists of a power supply unit mounted remotely at the base of the flagpole and a flash head, at the apex of the structure, which illuminates with xenon-type flashtubes. A calibrated photocell automatically switches the system between day and night intensities, and a light-blocking strip in the flash head minimizes ground scatter light, making it more community-friendly.
“The use of a medium intensity white strobe during the daytime eliminates the need to paint the structure,” said Jeff Jacobs, Vice President Sales. “Hughey & Phillips lighting combines a daytime white strobe light and a nighttime red flashing light into a single flash head, eliminating the need for two separate lighting systems.”
Hughey & Phillips FG3000B obstruction strobe lighting products meet or exceed Federal Aviation Administration (FAA) and International Civil Aviation Organization (ICAO) requirements, producing 20,000 candela of white light during the day and 2,000 candela of red light at night.
Hughey & Phillips systems provide aviation safety on a wide range of tall structures around the world, such as communication towers and antennas, buildings, bridges, wind turbines, grain elevators, smokestacks and other obstructions to aerial navigation.
Following are the five Guinness runners-up for world’s highest unsupported flagpole—all lighted by Hughey & Phillips—listed from second to sixth place:
- Baku, Azerbaijan, 162 M (531 ft.), at National Flag Square, slightly taller than the United Nations buildings in New York City.
- Ashgabat, Turkmenistan, 133 M (436 ft.).
- Aqaba, Jordan,130 M (426 ft.). The flagpole is visible from four countries.
- Amman, Jordan, 126 M (413 ft.).
- Abu Dhabi, United Arab Emirates, 123.1 M (403.9 ft.).
