Pfizer supplies veterinarians with antibiotics to support recovery efforts

Without the drugs, the whales were in danger of a worsening infection. Pfizer’s effort to get the antibiotics to us quickly was critical to saving the whales' lives.

Pfizer Animal Health helped three sick and stranded whales last month by providing antibiotics to the veterinarians in the Florida Keys treating them.

“We received a request for injectable antibiotics after the whales were found to have infections from being stranded,” said Christina Dougherty, VMD, Veterinary Medical Information and Product Support Manager for Pfizer Animal Health. “As veterinarians, our mission is to help animals, no matter what the shape or size. It felt great to be able to provide a product for animals that desperately needed it.”

The antibiotics were used to treat the whales that had developed infections and pneumonia while being kept alive in a bayside pen at the center of the Marine Mammal Conservatory Center in Florida.

“Without the drugs, the whales were in danger of a worsening infection,” said Micah Brodsky, VMD, the veterinarian at the Marine Mammal Conservatory Center who requested the antibiotics. “Pfizer’s effort to get the antibiotics to us quickly was critical to saving the whales’ lives.”

Over the past year, Pfizer Animal Health has donated more than $90,000 in products to help veterinarians treat animals in need through the Association of Zoos and Aquariums (AZA).

The AZA donation is a component of Pfizer Animal Health’s Commitment to Veterinarians™ platform—which offers support through training and education, research and development, investing in the future of the veterinary profession, and philanthropy.
