"Sideways Crow" David Swenson leads the Ashtanga Yoga Retreat at Four Seasons Resort Maui September 10-15, 2011, part of the resort's "Unforgettable Events" series.

Yoga enthusiasts are invited to join internationally renowned Ashtanga Yoga masters David Swenson and Shelly Washington to deepen their personal practice in the serene setting of Four Seasons Resort Maui at Wailea, September 10-15, 2011. This dynamic duo is known for presenting Ashtanga Yoga (http://www.ashtanga.net) with depth, insight, intuition, and integrity while maintaining a down-to-earth, comprehensive style. Students of great Ashtanga master K. Pattabhi Jois, Swenson and Washington teach many poses and philosophies from the discipline as it was originally taught.

David Swenson started practicing yoga in 1969, at the age of 13. His introduction to Ashtanga came in 1973. In 1975, K. Pattabhi Jois came to the USA for the first time and Swenson was fortunate enough to initiate studies directly with the master. Today, Swenson is recognized as one of the world’s foremost practitioners and instructors of Ashtanga Yoga. He is the author of the bestselling book: Ashtanga Yoga: The Practice Manual as well as five DVDs.

Shelly Washington graduated from Julliard School in New York and went on to dance with Martha Graham, Twyla Tharp, and American Ballet Theater. When she discovered Ashtanga Yoga, she redirected her passion, throwing herself into the practice with heart and soul. Her love for the practice brought her to Mysore, India on numerous occasions, where she also studied directly with K. Pattabhi Jois. Together, Swenson and Washington make a powerful teaching team. They offer practical applications and safe adjusting techniques to evolve each student’s practice.
