Chicago-based startup gains approval from FAA and Chicago Police Department to take over the skies and streets for official citywide launch on July 22.

SceneTap, a startup that applies the best aspects of social networks to local barhopping, today announced an official launch date of Friday, July 22. The FAA has granted permission for the use of multiple skylights, 50 of which SceneTap is shipping in from other cities, to light up the Chicago skies that night as part of the launch celebration.

What else can be expected the night of? Exotic vehicles will roam the streets, celebrities and local athletes will mingle with bar patrons, and the SceneTap party will commence at all participating venues, making the entire city part of the “scene.” Major prizes, such as paid vacations to future launch parties, will be awarded to lucky SceneTap users who partake in the Chicago festivities.

“Instead of just planning a launch party, we wanted to create a full-on experience for the entire city,” said Cole Harper, CEO of SceneTap. “One of the most important aspects of SceneTap is getting the users and venues to interact with one another to create a powerful, tangible social experience. Throwing a launch like this will ensure that anyone going out in Chicago on July 22 can be a part of the festivities, regardless of the type of phone they have.”

The official SceneTap Chicago launch marks the first time the public will be able to download and use the free iPhone and Android app, as well as access real-time, anonymous bar data via SceneTap’s website. The startup has already partnered with more than 50 of Chicago’s most popular bars in neighborhoods across the city and over 200 around the country. The Chicago venues, some being announced for the first time, include Moes River North, Joes on Weed Street, Casey Morans, Rockwood Place, Shenannigans, Cans, Lotties, Kincades, State, Duffys, and Public House. SceneTap will continue to release bar names on its Facebook and Twitter pages leading up to the July 22 launch.

How does SceneTap work?

  • Open SceneTap to see featured bars, deals, and specials in your area
  • Locate nearby bars in map view or list view and receive immediate information
  • Or, search more specific criteria: by number of people at the bar, age range of patrons, gender ratio, “type of scene,” distance, and more
  • Browse specials, real-time SceneTap deals, and what people are saying on the bar’s page
  • Access additional bar information (including its website) so you know it’s the right spot for you
  • Map out your trip to the bar from your current location, or even just check out the street view
  • Socialize your interactions with Facebook, Twitter, Foursquare, and other services so you don’t have to leave the app
