Ordinary bed linens retain moisture, which contributes to discomfort that can steal hours of sleep from people who experience nighttime perspiration
Greensboro, NC (PRWEB) July 11, 2011
In a recent study of nearly 2,300 patients of primary care physicians, more than 40 percent reported experiencing excessive sweating, known as hyperhidrosis, while they were asleep. Among women, the chief factor responsible for hyperhydrosis is hot flashes related to menopause. But in men, doctors say, there usually is no identifiable medical cause, and therefore no suggested treatment, for chronic sweating at night.
But that does not mean men have no option but to get used to sleeping most of the night with sweat-soaked sheets and pillowcases. Now, specialized bedding that uses fabric technology similar to that in moisture-dissipating active wear and athletic clothing is coming to the aid of people who experience excessive nighttime sweating.
The advanced sheets and pillowcases, marketed under the Cool Sensations® brand, are made from scientifically designed DermaTherapy® therapeutic bedding fabric manufactured by Precision Fabrics Group (PFG). “Even for men who report a degree of nighttime perspiration comparable to what they get after a physical workout, this state-of-the-art bedding wicks perspiration moisture away from the body,” said Traci Broughton, DermaTherapy product manager for PFG. “That helps a person sleep more restfully because they feel cooler, drier and more comfortable. “Ordinary bed linens made from cotton and cotton-polyester blend fabrics retain moisture so they contribute to discomfort that can steal hours of sleep from people who experience nighttime perspiration.”
According to Broughton, getting that sleep back is one way to address nighttime hyperhidrosis. “It’s a cycle,” she said. “Many researchers believe that night sweats not related to a medical condition are caused at least partly by stress. In turn, people often experience increased stress when they don’t get a good night’s sleep. So when drier sheets improve sleep quality, stress is reduced, and that can help alleviate or lessen the severity of night sweats.”
