Deborah Mackin, author of the team-building tool kit series, including The Team-Building Tool Kit, Second Edition in 2007 (AMACOM), recently partnered with Execsense to host a webinar for consultants looking to gain a competitive edge. Mackin presented on The 7 Professional Skills Most Critical to the Success of a Consultant for the large webinar firm based in California.

The 60 minute webinar taught skills on how today’s consultants can better maximize and enhance their presentation styles, writing, communication, time management, delegation, management and leadership skills – all of which Mackin believes leads to a successful consultant career.

Mackin stated after the webinar, “This is somewhat of a different approach for me. Usually I’m talking about teamwork or employee competencies; however for this webinar I had to sit down and ask ‘what have I done, personally, to make myself and my firm successful in the consultant profession and what might I tell other aspiring consultants looking to do the same thing?’”

Mackin started her own consultant practice in 1984 a firm that has withstood 4 economic recessions, financial crisis, downsizing, and many client woes to become a well-respected, international, 27 year old business. Some of Mackin’s most recent clients include that Coca-Cola, sanofi pasteur, Alcoa, Ellis Hospital and Crane Currency.

The best advice Mackin offered attending participants included, “enhancing your credibility through communication, becoming a great questioner, providing ‘just-in-time’ information to your clients, managing your time (and your staff’s) wisely, and defining your key value while being value-added to the customer.” However, Mackin said the one thing that has truly made her a success for almost three decades is simply “showing up, on time, prepared and ready to go.”
