Athlete turned MMA fighter, Stephen Reeks, has recorded the fastest MMA submission of all time, taking just 7-seconds to rule his opponent out of the contest. Since this amazing achievement Stephen has publicly cited the paleo diet as the key to his success.
Going from being relatively unknown on the MMA circuit, Stephen Reeks is now enjoying new found respect and Internet fame as the video of his incredible victory goes viral with MMA fans worldwide. Yet it isn’t just Stephen who has been plunged into the spotlight, and after having directly cited Nikki Young’s Paleo Cookbooks as his secret winning formula, rival fighters and fans alike are eagerly Googling away to find out more about the diet often referred to as the “Caveman Diet”.
Fighting in the 145pound weight class, Stephen, like other fighters, is faced with the difficult task of cutting down for the pre-fight weigh in. However, Stephen says that by following the paleo diet this task has become a seamless formality; “Making weight used to be a nightmare. Having to lose 3kg (6.6 pounds) by weigh in day left me feeling fatigued and weaker than normal. Thanks to the paleo diet I now sustain a low level of body fat at all times, which means I don’t need to put on weight to build strength and then have to starve myself before a fight. I am now energised and strong on fight day, whereas my opponent is drained of energy due to weeks of a hard cutting process”.
Stephen is also managing to stay injury free due to the way in which the paleo diet avoids foods scientifically proven to be alien to the human digestive system. By cutting out grains and dairy and sugar-laden meals, paleo athletes are able to eliminate inflammation and drastically reduce the chance of injury. Stephen explains, “Within two weeks of following Nikki’s Paleo Cookbook recipes my recovery time was almost half of what it used to be. I had also eradicated daily energy crashes and was simultaneously reducing my body fat and maintaining muscle mass. The paleo diet has taught me to increase my vegetable intake and reduce harmful grains and dairy, and to up my lean protein intake through quality meats like grass fed beef and free range chicken.”
Stephen’s foray into the paleo diet wasn’t an easy one, and like most athletes he was previously hooked on grains, thinking that he needed to constantly “carb up” for energy, when in fact this outmoded approach to training was stopping him fulfilling his potential as a fighter.
Having heard of a few other fighters trying out the paleo diet, Stephen decided to see how the “diet of our ancestors” might work for him. Stephen concludes, “The paleo diet has changed me from a good fighter to a great fighter with loads more energy, strength and lean muscle. I won’t lie, it wasn’t easy giving up bread and pasta, but it was well worth it. I now fight at my peak and don’t have to waste time with weigh in day preparation and the frustration of fluctuating weight. I have no intention of going back to my old diet and I am on a mission to achieve even greater things, both in the ring and in other areas of my life.”
