Zero Configuration Environment Monitoring

Smaller organisations need to realise that effective monitoring can be simple, quick and economical to install. Ensuring optimum conditions for equipment ultimately saves money and energy

Openxtra announce the release of Xsensior-Lite, a zero configuration USB temperature and humidity monitor with email alerting making environment monitoring simple and accessible.

Xsensior Lite TH1 is a small USB environment monitor which plugs into the USB port of a PC or laptop. Running as a service under Windows, it simplifies email alerts and graphing to make monitoring temperature and humidity of the server room or data center easy. Release of the Xsensior Lite is the second in a suite of USB monitoring devices planned.

The Xsensior Lite is a small USB device which plugs into the USB port of a PC or laptop. Running as a service under Windows, the device takes less than a minute from plugging in to recording the first reading. The user simply sets the temperature and humidity thresholds and email addresses for alerting. A clean and uncluttered user interface offers quick view graphing and status and graphs and logs can be exported into other applications with one click.

UK based Openxtra, developed the Xsensior Lite monitor in response to a customer survey which demonstrated a requirement for an environment monitoring device which is simpler to deploy than an Ethernet monitoring solution. Respondents also indicated that humidity monitoring was almost as crucial as temperature monitoring in the IT environment.

All survey participants had already implemented some temperature monitoring in their server rooms but most agreed that a small portable device which was simple and easy to use for spot checking would be a useful addition to their monitoring portfolio. This was felt to be particularly useful in an environment such as education where moves and changes are commonly made (21% of participants were from the education sector).

Denis Laverty, Openxtra MD says “Although larger organisations realise the importance and the return on investment of effective environment monitoring in server rooms and data centres, many smaller organisations do not realise that effective monitoring can be very simple, quick and economical to install. Should a critical environmental event such as air conditioning or fan failure occur, the user is immediately notified by email meaning that they can rest assured that their equipment is functioning correctly and in optimum conditions.”

For any organisation, running mission critical machines in optimum temperature and humidity conditions extends the lifetime of expensive equipment and ensures that operating errors are kept to a minimum.

The Xsensior TH1 monitor is a quick useful tool for IT consultants responsible for ICT at a number of organisations. A simple and quick install means that the temperature and humidity is immediately available and can be monitored at a number of locations without much outlay in terms of cost or time.
