Virginia based businesswoman and all around foodie, Lisa Mushaw, is breaking down barriers by joining a small group of minority-owned European food importers in the United States. Global food import is projected to be a robust 1.2 billion dollar business by the end of 2011, however, minority and woman owned participation account for a minute fraction of the industry.
“Being a businesswoman and certified Sommelier has its rewards, but sharing my passion for exquisite foods and helping people find their own is what drives me,” said Mushaw, who founded Treasures of Tuscany an Epicurean Voyage, an Italian Culinary Tour geared towards jet-setting American foodies. The company began in 2002 and explores Italian cuisine with chef-instructed hands-on cooking classes as well as tours to vineyards and olive groves throughout Tuscany.
Drawing from the desire to share her experiences as well as the story of the artisan process of producing olive oil, she decided to begin an import business. Today Mushaw supplies olive oil to a growing number of exclusive restaurants and retailers based in the Washington, D.C. area, and the entrepreneur is poised to roll out her high-end olive oil nationally in time for the Q4 holiday season.
A native of Reston, Virginia, Mushaw earned a degree in English Literature from George Mason University and has a diverse and distinguished background, which includes working for the renowned Creative Artists Agency, de Passe Entertainment and the White House Liaison Office for the U.S. Department of Agriculture. Such high level assignments helped Mushaw to acquire a taste for many of the finer things and places that the world has to offer and earned her bona fides as a culinary and lifestyle specialist. She recently completed her Sommelier certification further establishing her reputation among food and wine aficionados.
