Homeowner Jean Celestin was having trouble paying his mortgage and was notified that a foreclosure proceeding was being filed by his lender (Case # 53-2009-CA-013400). According to Mr. Celestin he was troubled by this notification and had no knowledge of what he could do to save his home. Mr. Celestin was notified about an organization called Reaching U Network, a Non-Profit Organization that could help him save his home.

Mr. Celestin was put in contact with a Reaching U Network volunteer that provided Mr. Celestin a free mortgage analysis. Mr. Celestin was also put in contact with a foreclosure defense attorney who provided Mr. Celestin a free consultation regarding his mortgage situation. After his consultation Mr. Celestin decided he would seek legal counsel and challenge his lender in court. Unfortunately he waited too long before contacting an attorney and came home one day to find his door locked, as his lender had obtained a final judgment in front of a judge.

The foreclosure process has many steps; the first one is that a homeowner is served a summons and a complaint. What most people don’t know is that in the state of Florida you are given 20 days to dispute it, otherwise the foreclosure firm takes a default against all who did not respond and sets a date for a final judgment to be granted against the homeowner. That 20 day period is crucial in saving a home and this is where an attorney is best suited to represent a homeowner who has been summoned for foreclosure. Unfortunately for Mr. Celestin, like most homeowners, was not aware of this time frame to dispute his lender and the sheriff came to his home and placed locks on its doors, leaving Mr. Celestin homeless.

When Reaching U Network learned about Mr. Celestin’s situation they were saddened by the news. Mr. Celestin has moved into a temporary apartment and Reaching U Network is helping him by providing the $700 deposit and a $300 Wal-Mart card for his new apartment, they will also contribute $300 a month for the next year to help pay his rent. The attorney on his case will continue to represent Mr. Celestin, pro bono, to fight the lenders who have repossessed his home (possibly illegally).

Reaching U Network helps to save hundreds of homes but like many homeowners who are not aware of their legal rights, not all homes can be saved, everyone’s situation is different, that is why Reaching U Network continues to put its efforts into educating homeowners of their rights. If a homeowner is losing their home, the best thing to do is hire an attorney as soon as possible, someone that can deal with the lender on a higher level and can negotiate a work out option that works for both parties involved.

Reaching U Network can help connect homeowners with affordable legal representation with no up front fees or retainers and a low monthly rate. They can be reached at or 866-514-INFO.
