The practice of Ashtanga Yoga is an incredibly universal tool. The practitioner will find benefits within all realms of life. On a physical level we can experience greater flexibility and strength while on an energetic level greater clarity and awareness.

Watching David Swenson move fluidly through his Ashtanga Yoga practice (http://www.ashtanga.net) it is easy to miss how he controls his breath so evenly when going from one difficult pose into the next. Swenson, one of the world's foremost practitioners, explains that on a physical level our bodies and minds function at a higher level when the blood is full of oxygen. He says this can be achieved through deep controlled breathing. He believes that yoga is built upon a simple yogic saying: "The mind is more difficult to control than the wind, but if we are able to control our breath we may control our mind."
This fall, he and his partner-wife, Shelley Washington, will be in residence at Four Seasons Resort Maui at Wailea, September 10-15, 2011. They are planning a series of sessions focused upon controlled breathing to produce a deeper state of calm and an evenness of the mind. They also will be teaching students many of the poses and philosophies from the original Ashtanga discipline. The goal is to help each student improve his or her individual practice. The retreat is geared to all levels of students. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=hgWetQdJl6c
Swenson started practicing yoga at the age of 13. In addition to teaching the discipline globally for many years, he is the author of the bestselling book, Ashtanga Yoga: The Practice Manual and producer of five DVDs. Washington, a former dancer with the celebrated Martha Graham, Twyla Tharp and the American Ballet Theater, redirected her passion to Ashtanga Yoga and has joined her husband David Swenson to form a powerful teaching team, offering practical applications and safe adjusting techniques to evolve each student's practice. Both have studied with Ashtanga Master K. Pattabhi Jois.
