Mommy Reporter Media, LLC is proud to announce the launch of The Social Media Learning Series, a collection of workshops teaching social media basics to small business owners in the Atlanta, Georgia area. Mom-preneur and former journalist Desiree Peeples has organized a unique event that will cater to the need of hands-on social media training and education.
Desiree's story began when she was laid off from her job as a reporter over two years ago. A single mom who recently moved to Atlanta from Las Vegas, Desiree began blogging right after the layoff. “I wanted to continue doing news,” she explained. “I still had the passion and the drive to research stories, dig for information, and write—blogging was the perfect outlet for me.”
She quickly launched MommyReporter.com, a news and information site for social media moms. Her blog led to connections with other moms from all over the world and soon, large companies and big brands were contacting her as well. “I was getting lots of offers to review products, write articles for other sites and eventually, people started asking me how to blog,” Desiree said.
Even though she was getting lots of “free stuff” for herself and her then infant son, she wasn’t making any money. “I had lots of nice things, but I couldn’t pay my bills. It was disappointing because I had a great blog with a decent following, but I was struggling financially… I kept getting offers to review products, but companies were not offering cash, the thing I needed most,” Desiree said.
She finally began to do social media consulting for small businesses. “It was funny because for so long, I kept turning down opportunities to earn money this way. I never thought of myself as a ‘social media expert’ but people were very willing to pay me for what I knew.” Soon she was doing small projects for entertainment companies, artists, mortgage brokers, and other types of small businesses.
After working with a wide variety of clients, Desiree discovered that most small business owners really wanted to do their own social media networking and online marketing, they just didn’t know how to get started. “More than one client has asked me ‘how come no one is teaching classes on just the basics?’ she said. So I decided to do just that—create a series of workshops covering social media basics.”
The Social Media Learning Series has now become her “second baby.” Being a single mom to a three year-old boy keeps her busy enough, but she says her desire to provide high quality content and help for people who truly want it is what motivates her to work countless days and nights preparing for these classes. “My goal is to help small business owners develop an online presence in way that is unique and affordable, and I truly believe that The Social Media Learning Series will do just that…”
The series will begin on August 20, 2011 and will consist of four basic classes:
- Blogging 101
- The Smart User’s Guide to Facebook and Twitter
- Understanding YouTube: The Basics
- Learning LinkedIn
