EDDIE Living shares vision with Houston about becoming the first LEED-Certified foster care facility for girls

We believe that teaching the children principles of green living will give them a better outlook on life.

EDDIE Living will be hosting an informative meeting to share their mission and vision of sustainability to the Houston community at New Living. The event will be held Thursday, August 4th from 5:30 to 7:30 p.m. in Rice Village. The founding members, Sherrie, Gary and Sandra Thompson, Fred Williams and Donna Olson will be present to share their aspirations on how they will exceed the standards of foster care.

EDDIE Living stands for Elevating Desired Dreams into Enhanced Living. The acronym was created by Sherrie Thompson, who is the Executive Director of the organization. Thompson elaborates, “EDDIE also represents my late grandmother, Eddie Lee Jackson, who inspired me to follow my dreams and create an organization for underprivileged children. She was a strong woman of virtue, morals and really cared about making a difference in people's lives.”

Last year, 6,535 children were confirmed victims of child abuse and parental neglect in Harris County, according to the 2010 Department of Family Protective Services Data. Within this group of mistreated children, there is an increasing need for foster and residential care for girls ages 9 to 17. The need for children to be in safe residence, which fosters a child's socio-emotional development, is staggering. As these statistics increase, a newly launched non profit, EDDIE Living, wants to devote its efforts to setting a new standard by providing a holistic approach to a continuum of care.

The founding members have a goal not only to prepare children for adulthood in a nurturing home, but accomplish this in a sustainable, LEED-Certified environment. Board Members Gary Thompson and Fred Williams share, “EDDIE Living has a desire to make an environmental impact on society and set precedence for future foster care facilities. We believe that teaching the children principles of green living will give them a better outlook on life.”

The non profit organization is a 24-hour residential foster care facility currently located in the Northeast area of Houston that was recently remodeled to accommodate 15 children. The property sits on one acre of land and aspires to be the first LEED-Certified campus that includes an academic institution, medical assessment center, library, media center and recreational area.
