San Francisco, CA (PRWEB) July 14, 2011
IGN Entertainment, the world’s leading video games media company, continues to build its competitive gaming (eSports) offering as it launches its second IGN Pro League (IPL) tournament – IPL 2 – Across the Atlantic – today at 5PM PDT at http://www.ign.com/ipl.
Featuring a daily broadcast focused on the big money, high-stakes tournament, IPL 2 – Across the Atlantic will see 32 of the US and Europe’s best Starcraft II players vying for their part of the $50k prize pot, including the $20k first prize. Launched in April 2011, IGN’s first pro league tournament attracted more than 800,000 visitors, with its daily broadcast routinely attracting audiences of over 20,000 concurrent viewers.
Qualifiers for IPL2 involved nearly 2,000 of some of the best aspiring gamers in the world, who competed over the course of a month through partner Z33K (http://z33k.com). The tournament will feature daily matches amongst tournament competitors including US gamers IdrA and KiwiKaki against European talent including White-Ra and ThorZaIN – backed up by broadcast production and expert, insightful commentary from eSports veterans and fan favorites HDStarcraft, Day 9, Artosis, Tasteless, DjWheat and Total Biscuit.
“Until now, no one has been able to connect the passion of a loyal community with millions of mainstream games consumers across the globe,” said David Ting, General Manager of eSports and Vice President of Research & Development, IGN Entertainment. “IPL 2 will bring together professional gamers from the US and Europe to determine which country has the best Starcraft II players, and the $50k prize pot will guarantee some unmissable viewing for esports fanatics and gamers around the world who enjoy spectator sports.”
While eSports has been under the radar in the United States, eSports is already huge across Asia and Europe, where massive LAN events bring tens of thousands of gamers and their PCs together in major venues to face off against their online rivals. Through its IPL, IGN seeks to legitimize gaming as a profession, delivering a professional, polished and interactive experience to fans of eSports.
With IGN attracting more than 70m gamers worldwide to its content – and IGN.com recently being recognized by Guinness World Records as the “World’s Most Popular Video Games Website” – IGN will leverage its unrivalled online position to make this a successful league with the best players in the world joining the IPL to compete for large amounts of money and the chance to become an eSports star.
