Location-based check-in services have increased in popularity, with usage tripling among Americans last year, according to market researcher SNL Kagan. But by focusing on places rather than people, virtual badges rather than real relationships, businesses have been tracking the number of check-ins instead of measuring the direct impact of customer experience on revenues. As a result, they haven’t been able to fully leverage the power of location-based services to drive loyalty or enhance the bottom line, according to Ray Wang, principal analyst and CEO at Constellation Research.
