People battling a weight problem or obesity face a frustrating cycle related to their sleep patterns, health experts say. Excessive perspiration associated with being overweight or obese makes it difficult to get a good night’s sleep. Now, specialized bedding that uses fabric technology similar to that in moisture-dissipating active wear and athletic clothing is coming to the aid of people whose nighttime sweating could be hindering their efforts to shed pounds.

The advanced sheets and pillowcases are marketed under the Cool Sensations® brand, and are made from scientifically designed DermaTherapy therapeutic bedding fabric manufactured by Precision Fabrics Group (PFG) of Greensboro, NC. “This state-of-the-art bedding wicks perspiration moisture away from the body and helps the person trying to rest feel cooler, drier and more comfortable,” said Traci Broughton, DermaTherapy product manager for PFG. “Tests show the increased comfort experienced by people who are prone to heavy sweating at night makes it likely they will get a better night’s sleep.”    

The testing Broughton referred to is a clinical study conducted by Northeast Surgical Associates Ltd. of Middlefield, Ohio. Twenty-eight subjects plagued by excessive sweating while trying to sleep reported a 52 percent improvement in sleep quality when they used DermaTherapy bed sheets and pillowcases.
Participants in the trial were asked to rate their sleep experience after they had used the DermaTherapy bedding. In addition to the 52 percent improvement in overall quality of sleep over the eight-week study period, participants reported a 53 percent reduction in the amount of time it took them to fall asleep. They also reported that improvement in overall comfort, their ability to keep cool, and the perception of feeling dry led to fewer sleep disturbances during the night.

“Thousands of people find that discomfort from sweating throughout the night prevents them from getting a good night’s sleep,” Broughton says. Because ordinary bed linens made from cotton and cotton-polyester blend fabrics retain moisture, they contribute to discomfort and can steal hours of sleep from people who experience nighttime perspiration.”

A better night’s sleep has significant benefits for those who struggle to maintain a healthy body weight. Medical evidence linking sleep deprivation with weight gain has been well documented, including a large-scale study (more than 68,000 women) by Case Western Reserve University, which found that women who sleep less than five hours a night gain more weight over time than those who sleep at least seven hours a night. The women who slept less were more likely to become obese, even though they consumed on average fewer calories than those who slept a full night. Similar results have been reported in studies involving children.

Specialists have identified a number of factors that could explain the correlation between lost sleep and weight gain. Research shows that chronic sleep deprivation can:

  •     Interfere with the body's ability to metabolize carbohydrates, leading to increased storage of body fat.
  •     “Trick” the body’s hormone system into signaling the body that it is hungry and has an inadequate amount of stored fat, which causes the body to crave carbohydrates.
  •     Hamper the body’s ability to regulate its proportions of fat and muscle.
