The numerous fundraisers, charity events and research foundations for leukemia research and funding attest to the feelings people attach to this unrelenting disease. Many people have personal stories about friends and loved ones who have suffered from the devastation of leukemia. In Leukemia Lessons (published by AuthorHouse), a new book by Maria R. Mabe, a daughter shares the story of her mother’s two-year battle with leukemia, a disease which ultimately claimed her life.
I will remember it clearly as long as I live. On Thursday, June 7, 1999, Mom and I were walking up the hill from the Our Lady of Greenwood Festival to the parking lot to drive home, when she said, “It is so hard to believe that we now have a family member – [Uncle Tom] – with active cancer.” Little did we know that on Friday, June 18, 1999, our lives would be forever changed when she was diagnosed with AML. Thus, adding to the number of family members with cancer.
Leukemia Lessons is Mabe’s emotional confession of what she was feeling during her mother’s treatment at Indiana University Medical Center, and what she felt after she lost her mother. It is justifiably raw. “If I had tried to write this right after she left me, this book would have been filled with 100% anger,” says Mabe. “I am still 100% angry, but not 100% filled with anger. It is more sadness and missing that I am filled with now.”
With Leukemia Lessons, Mabe reveals her grief as well as what she learned as her mother battled Acute Myeloid Leukemia. Her story is personal, but the lessons she leaves for readers are valuable.
