In an age where “Big Brother” is watching, many Americans live in fear of privacy invasion. There seems to be a widespread paranoia as satellite and GPS technology becomes more common. When used inappropriately, scandal surrounds global positioning systems.
About a month ago, automotive-fleet.com performed a study regarding personal use of company vehicles, and use of personal vehicles for company matters. GPS technology was cited as one of the only ways to track unregulated company vehicle use.
Should personal vehicles for business usage be tracked as well? Many professionals think not. FoxTrax GPS President, Pat Brannan, begs to differ.
“We’re a small business looking out for other small businesses. It would benefit any small business owner to track his employees,” Brannan explained. “I would do the same if I had a need for fleet vehicles.”
Business professionals—specifically those who would be tracked in their personal vehicles—take umbrage with this practice. Most cite the practice as an invasion of privacy.
“This is where the Big Brother paranoia kicks in,” Brannan continued. “Business professionals will say, ‘Well, either you trust me or you don’t. If you don’t trust me, I don’t need to be working for you.’ But if you are a safe, efficient driver, why would you mind, especially if you are being paid for mileage? That’s my question.”
Brannan’s GPS products include a hard-wired device, as well as a removable, battery operated device that Brannan noted would be perfect for personal vehicles on company time.
“It’s pretty easy to set up a tracker that only tracks during business hours. I don’t think many people are aware of that.”
