Today, Greenopia updated its independent green ratings of approximately 30 popular pet food brands sold in the USA. The only brands receiving the coveted Greenopia Four-Green-Leaf Award were Karma of Natura Pet Products, The Honest Kitchen, Wenaewe, and Raw Advantage.
While most pet owners are conscious of what they feed their animal, there is often confusion as to which products are made from high quality sources and which ingredients are the safest. With its guide, Greenopia aims to educate consumers and help them find the pet foods that are made with the best ingredients and are also the safest for the planet.
"It seems that pet food recalls are happening more and more frequently," said Gay Browne, Greenopia's founder. “In our analysis, we tried to combine the food’s environmental attributes with an assessment of its ingredients to find not only safest foods for your pet, but also ones that are better for the planet.”
Greenopia collected data from manufacturers and independent credible sources about each brand's ingredients, packaging, sustainability reporting, supply chain, animal testing policies, and green building design. Companies were given additional points for their adoption of environmental initiatives.
”The pet food industry seems to struggle in terms of environmental progress relative to other industries that we study,” said Doug Mazeffa, Research Director of Greenopia. “Presently, there is very little in the way of environmental reporting and we had a difficult time finding companies who had addressed areas such as packaging and logistical impacts.”
Eight brands earned a three-leaf-rating: Dr. Harvey's, Newman's Own Organics, Petguard, Champion, Castor & Pollox, Back to Basics, Wellness and Dogswell.
