Groupon-style email marketing companies are well-known for creating awareness and publicity, but there's a dark side of the business for local retailers. Many small businesses are voicing complaints about unacceptable deal terms, high costs, unhappy patrons, and slow payout schedules. According to Barkr CEO Aaron Lindsey, resentment toward the Groupon model runs deep.
“I was taken aback by the intensity of discontent expressed by local businesses who felt burned by large ‘big-box’ deal companies,” Lindsey said. “The reality is that small business owners need more local exposure, but they can’t afford the high costs associated with trumped-up campaign terms and conditions.”
Barkr recently released a public beta of a new deals model that they hope will reverse the growing negative sentiment about deal-based advertising. Oriented towards small businesses, Barkr lets retailers create deals that appear as notifications on iPhones as customers walk or drive by their business location. Retailers craft their own deal, enter it into the Barkr system and see exactly how it will appear on customers' iPhone screens.
Barkr manages the transaction with the customer and pays the retailer weekly after keeping a small transaction fee.
“We understand that small businesses first require the freedom to customize deals and costs to their needs,” continues Lindsey. “By extending daily specials to people’s iPhones as they walk or drive by, we’re helping retailers reach new customers right then and there.”
Barkr alerts iPhone users of deals with push notifications as they pass by retail locations. While currently only available for iPhones, Barkr expects to release an Android version in the coming months.
