Another cool and wet summer is occurring across the UK this year, matching a pattern that has generally persisted since 2007. This pattern will likely persist at least through part of August before the autumn pattern begins to emerge.

WSI (Weather Services International) expects temperatures for the upcoming period (August-October) to average higher than normal across all areas in Europe, except for UK and parts of France and Benelux.

“Another cool and wet summer is occurring across the UK this year, matching a pattern that has generally persisted since 2007. High-latitude atmospheric blocking, as manifested by the negative phase of the North Atlantic Oscillation (NAO), has been in control again this summer. This has resulted in lower pressures across the UK and northwestern Europe, while higher pressures and very warm summer temperatures have been the rule elsewhere,” said WSI Chief Meteorologist Dr. Todd Crawford. “This pattern will likely persist at least through part of August before the autumn pattern begins to emerge. By September, we expect a transition towards below-normal temperatures across all of southern Europe and above-normal temperatures across Scandinavia and parts of the northern mainland. Finally, by October, more widespread below-normal temperatures are likely across much of the mainland. While it is too early to predict the winter pattern, we should be able to make an initial stab at the forecast in our update to clients on 17 August.”

In August, WSI predicts regional temperature anomalies as follows:
Nordic Region*    – Warmer than normal
UK* – Cooler than normal
Northern Mainland* – Warmer than normal, except France/Benelux
Southern Mainland* – Warmer than normal, except France

In September, WSI sees the monthly breakdown as:
Nordic Region– Warmer than normal
UK – Warmer than normal
Northern Mainland – Warmer than normal
Southern Mainland – Cooler than normal, except Iberia

In October, WSI forecasts:
Nordic Region – Warmer than normal, except Denmark
UK – Cooler than normal
Northern Mainland – Cooler than normal
Southern Mainland – Cooler than normal, except Iberia

WSI, providing customized weather information to energy traders, will issue its next seasonal outlook on 22 August.
