Popularity can often become the center of a child’s life. How many films and books are filled with examples like being chosen last for kickball? In The Scrawny Little Tree (published by WestBow Press), author Sandra Corley uses the story of a lonely little tree to show young readers the importance of acceptance.
There were so many beautiful trees Jeri couldn’t decide which on to buy. Then she saw the little tree standing alone in the corner. She saw something special about that little tree – but she walked away. Then she came back. Jeri looked at the little tree again and gently touched his branches. “She wouldn’t want me,” he thought.
Scrawny the Tree is a smaller tree, who doesn’t stand out amongst his larger brethren. He has to make himself known to even be chosen for inclusion into the picked load going to the Christmas tree sale lot. His journey isn’t as easy as he believed, and once at the lot he’s disappointed to find out his small stature continues to plague him.
Ten days after Scrawny arrives, a nice woman named Jeri comes to the lot looking for a tree for her club’s Christmas show. He is certain Jeri will choose one of the larger, more attractive trees, but she doesn’t. She chooses Scrawny, and gives him a set of beautiful decorations and plants him back in the woods to grow again when Christmas is over.
The Scrawny Little Tree is an inspirational book that provides children an accessible and familiar example of the power of popularity, one that encourages them to include everyone in their social circles.
