Mail Tribune, Daily Tidings Earn Professional Honors in the 2011 Oregon Newspaper Publishers Association (ONPA) Contest

The Mail Tribune took home eight first-place awards, including for overall excellence, and 17 awards overall in the 2011 Oregon Newspaper Publishers Association (ONPA) contest.

The Mail Tribune took home eight first-place awards, including for overall excellence, and 17 awards overall in the 2011 Oregon Newspaper Publishers Association (ONPA) contest.

The Ashland Daily Tidings scored three first-place awards and 12 awards overall.

The Mail Tribune competed in a category against newspapers with a circulation between 10,000-25,000. The Ashland Daily Tidings competes with papers with circulations of 10,000 or less.

The ONPA presented its 2011 contest awards to member newspapers and announced new officers and directors during the association's annual competition in Salem.

The Mail Tribune awards included:

    The Mail Tribune staff was awarded first place for General Excellence, with the Klamath Falls Herald and News and the Corvallis Gazette-Times coming in second and third, respectively.
    The Mail Tribune's annual "Our Valley" publication took second in the Special Section category.
    Reporter Damian Mann took home third place in Best Business and Economic Coverage for his August story on the closing of a lumber mill in Glendale.
    Editor Bob Hunter won third place for his editorial writing.
    Former Mail Tribune reporter Paris Achen won first place for her story about the increasing costs of school insurance.
    Reporter Mark Freeman won third place in the Best Feature Story category for his tongue-in-cheek how-to article about staying alive when you become lost in the woods in winter.
    Reporter Hannah Guzik won first place in Best Lifestyle Coverage for her story about the homeless in Ashland.
    Reporter Sanne Specht took home first place in the Best Local Column category for her Southern Oregon Journal entries. Reporter Paul Fattig won second for his long-running "Off the Beaten Path" column.
    Sports editor Tim Trower won first place for Best Sports Story for his profile of an Eagle Point man who was the captain of 1948-49 UCLA basketball team.
    Reporter Chris Conrad won third place in the Best Spot News category for his story about the Oak Knoll fire.
    News Editor Robert Galvin took third place for Best Page One Design for his front page layout of the return of the National Guard in April.
    Photo editor Bob Pennell won second in the Best Photo Essay category for his pictures showing the aftermath of the Oak Knoll fire.
    Julie Wurth and Anita Burke won first place for Best Overall Website and Best Online Coverage for the Oak Knoll fires. They also won third place for Best Website Design and first place for Best Multimedia Element. (Clarification: Andrew Eckerson was a member of the web team, creating the award-winning multimedia presentation on climbing Mount McLoughlin.)

The Daily Tidings winners included:

    The Daily Tidings staff won second place for General Excellence.
    Reporter Hannah Guzik won multiple awards including first place for Best Business and Economic Coverage and Best Enterprise Reporting.

Guzik also won third for Best Education Coverage and Best Spot News coverage.

    Reporter Vickie Aldous won first place, shared with Guzik, for best Enterprise Reporting and second place for Best Feature.
    Sports reporter and page designer Joe Zavala won second for Best Sports Story.
    The Daily Tidings' won first in Best Online Breaking News coverage. It took home second in the Best Website category and Best Multimedia.
    Copy editor and designer Eric Martin won second for Best Page One Design.
