Foundation offers initial gift of $25,000, capping gift of $375,000 to advance multi-year project in Sarasota.

Because The Patterson Foundation is a New Realities foundation, we have the flexibility, opportunity and the responsibility to invest in possibilities that are supported by multiple partners focused on making an impact.

The Patterson Foundation has announced its support for The Institute for the Ages, an initiative incubated by Sarasota County Openly Plans for Excellence (SCOPE) with an immediate gift of $25,000. In addition, if The Institute meets its financial goals, The Patterson Foundation will contribute a capping gift of $375,000 over the next three years.

“We are proud to announce our support for The Institute for the Ages, an independent 501(c)3 organization dedicated to researching and developing innovations to solve the challenges facing the community and our country as our population ages,” said Debra Jacobs, president and CEO of The Patterson Foundation. “Because The Patterson Foundation is a New Realities foundation, we have the flexibility, opportunity and the responsibility to invest in possibilities that are supported by multiple partners focused on making an impact.”

The Institute for the Ages is a direct response to the challenges associated with the global demographic transition. The Institute will leverage Sarasota County’s wealth of expertise and its leading-edge age demographic to help diverse stakeholders seize the opportunities presented by an aging population.

Sarasota is unique in that 32 percent of its population is over the age of 65 and 48 percent are over 55. According to the Census Bureau, people 65 and over will comprise 21 percent of the U.S. population by the year 2050.

“We are grateful for The Patterson Foundation’s generous gift to the Institute for the Ages,” said Tim Dutton, interim president of The Institute for the Ages and executive director of SCOPE. “The gift will help us create tangible solutions to the impending demographic transition through our research, innovation and partnership with other like-minded entities.”

The Institute is positioned to be a national think-tank and innovation center that will work with national businesses, research organizations and the public to generate new products, services and policies for the second half of life, Dutton said.

“We hope to leverage the generosity of local individuals, businesses and foundations to inspire national investment,” he said.
