“I think the bursary will be immensely helpful and also the personal support that is part of the award too. I’m not sure how I would have coped at CCAD and it will be great to have someone show me around and what is possible for me to do in the future.”

East Durham College student Katie-Ann Dowson has won a life changing and highly sought after bursary which will enable her to continue her studies at university.

This bursary, which is awarded by the Helen Kennedy Foundation, is for students from deprived or disadvantaged backgrounds and will help Katie with the costs she will incur by going to university.

Katie Ann, 18, sadly lost her mother when she was only four and has been brought up by her aunt and uncle since then. She lives with her aunt, uncle, sister Zoe and three cousins.

As you can imagine, money has always been extremely tight in such a crowded household. Katie has also had to deal with the fact that she is slightly autistic. Autism affects people in many different ways and can (depending on its severity) really disadvantage a young person with regards to their perceived prospects and employability.

However, Katie has never allowed her condition or family situation deter her from achieving her dreams. Fresh from completing a tough Level Three Art & Design course at East Durham College, she will use the bursary to start a foundation degree at the Cleveland College of Art & Design.

An ecstatic Katie-Ann says:

““I think the bursary will be immensely helpful and also the personal support that is part of the award too. I’m not sure how I would have coped at CCAD and it will be great to have someone show me around and what is possible for me to do in the future.”

What is the Helen Kennedy Foundation?

The Helen Kennedy Foundation is an award of £1500 that is given to just one student a year to help them with their further and higher education costs.

Further education colleges and adult learning centres across the whole of the UK nominate five students they feel deserve the award. The Committee at the Helen Kennedy Foundation then have the difficult job of determining which of all of the students gets the award.
