What does an experienced pharmacist have in common with an insulation company? Gene Sperling of Breathe-Rite Air would answer, “Building Science.”
Sperling’s experience as a licensed pharmacist has led him to learn about the science of buildings. Sperling said, “How the building is put together determines how the people inside that building live and breathe. Literally.” He sees Progressive Insulation & Windows (Progressive) as a partner that can execute his prescriptions for clean air and a healthy home.
Over the past nineteen years, Sperling has evaluated patients referred by allergy, immunology and oncology physicians. Because he saw patients not responding to classic medications, he recently began to focus his attention on the study of Building Science. He determined that houses that do not function as a whole house system can allow outside pollutants to come into the home.
The EPA notes:“Researchers found a significant increase in asthma symptoms associated with higher indoor air concentrations of both coarse and fine particulate matter inside the home.” And, as could be expected, the longer the exposure, the more damage that is done.
Sperling has identified a short list of common offending causes leading to deteriorating medical conditions. By doing a field evaluation of the home in conjunction with medical tests, he identifies circumstances that directly affect the individual patient.
Progressive’s approach to the same end point has been to partner with best-in-class contractors who can provide a complete whole house solution. On a recent collaboration with Sperling, Progressive received a prescription to address some common health related issues. One of these was an HVAC system improperly sealed bringing outside particulates into the home. Progressive brought team member SoCal Air Dynamics, a best-in-class HVAC contractor, to join in making this home healthy and comfortable.
Steve Anderson, President of Progressive, said, “Gene's information led him to diagnose the potential harm to the homeowner. He called Progressive in to apply building science by following the principle of sequencing events. To make sure the HVAC system works correctly, the first step was to air-seal and insulate.”
Three specialists from complementary but distinct trades worked together, from the medical diagnosis to the implementation of a home performance scope of work, each guided by building science protocol. Progressive has teamed with other best-in-class professionals to provide sustainable health and comfort solutions, not only for medical experts like Gene Sperling, but for concerned homeowners throughout Southern California.
Progressive Insulation & Windows, located in Chatsworth, CA, has been insulating homes and commercial buildings in Los Angeles, Ventura, Riverside and Orange Counties since 1978.
