Dr. Winifred S. Hayes Discusses Why U.S. Healthcare Spending is Out of Control on Life Love & Health

Continued spending on healthcare technologies without improvement in care is unsustainable

Dr. Winifred S. Hayes, PhD, president and CEO of Hayes, Inc., will be the featured guest on the July 29, 2011, radio broadcast of Life Love & Health hosted by Christopher Springmann. Dr. Hayes will discuss the economic and clinical impact when expensive new healthcare technologies gain mass adoption but fail to drive improvements in patient care and clinical outcomes.

“Today in the United States, we spend 17% of our gross domestic product on healthcare–far more than any other developing nation–yet we lag behind other developed nations in terms of quality of care,” says Dr. Hayes. “As a nation, we’ve become addicted to expensive new healthcare technologies that do not always improve the quality or safety of patient care. We spend billions on robotic surgery, proton beam therapy, and 64-slice CT scanners that don’t improve care or, worse yet, may not be as effective as the existing technologies they replace. Yet, pharmaceutical and medical device manufacturers know how to market, and because these products are positioned as ‘latest and greatest,’ they gain mass adoption well before the clinical evidence supports it.”

Dr. Hayes received her Doctor of Philosophy degree from the Johns Hopkins University School of Hygiene and Public Health (Bloomberg School of Public Health). A graduate of the University of Maryland School of Nursing, with Primary Care Nurse Practitioner and Master of Science degrees, she has served as an Associate Professor and Program Director for the Occupational Health Nursing Graduate Program at the University of Pennsylvania School of Nursing. She also served on the faculties of Emory University and the University of Maryland. She is currently affiliated with the Senior Scholars Program in the Department of Health Policy at the Jefferson Medical College. Dr. Hayes lectures and publishes as an advocate for the role that evidence-based decision making plays in improving patient outcomes and healthcare resource allocation.
