Whether the lab is large or small, lab staff can benefit from carrying a device that provides instant access to their cloud-based lab management program. While visiting a dental practice, an iPad allows lab staff to tell the dentist their account balance, add a shade to a case, or update the customer’s email address. This is not only practical but it impresses upon the dentist the lab’s high level of technical sophistication.
Many dental labs provide iPads to production departments as they can be used wirelessly, do not have fans, and take up almost no space. They can even be wall mounted. iPads with SIM cards provide redundant internet access in the event the regular Internet connection is interrupted. The fact the tablet devices don’t have moving parts means that they don’t get damaged by ambient dust from processes in the dental lab.
Dental lab owners and managers traveling to trade shows and meetings use the iPad to monitor all aspects of the lab. Dental lab sales staff can check and update customer information and monitor account activity from anywhere. Instant messaging ensures that lab staff receive messages without having to monitor multiple applications. In a pinch a smart phone can provide access to cloud-based lab software although the small screen is limiting.
When weather or other circumstances prevent an owner or manager from making it to the lab, cloud computing brings software functions home. Marketing pieces can be created and merged then emailed, faxed or texted to customers from home. Reports can be generated and analyzed - even statements can be run from home and directed to a print server to be printed from the dental lab.
The array of applications available for mobile devices adds yet another dimension to their usefulness. Wireless communications include email, fax and text messaging, most devices have built-in GPS capability with maps, and unlimited applications to help track flights, reservations, email, and just about anything else you can imagine.
Cloud based software and mobile devices can play a major role in helping labs get the information they need when and where they need it. As these devices improve with the scheduled release of the iPad3 already rumored to be late 2012 there is no evidence of the popularity of these devices is diminishing.
Evident dental lab management software is constantly developing its cloud-based software to take advantage of new technology as it comes to market. Over the last 2 years, Evident has seen dental lab owners and managers streamline their dental lab operations with the use of the Evident dental lab software and associated technologies.
