Chattanooga area builders and developers are lining up behind the city's green home rating system, Better Built, in an effort to spark widespread adoption of the program’s building standards.

Collier Construction, Steve Birger Construction, Adamson Developers and Chattanooga Neighborhood Enterprise (CNE) – a non-profit housing organization – recently announced their commitment to have 100% of all new residential construction projects certified by the Better Built program.

“Better Built’s mission is to provide a strategy for truly efficient housing,” said Brandi Hill, Better Built Program Director. “These contractors are meeting this challenge head on and are leading the way for sustainability in Chattanooga.”

Better Built is a local certification program that provides a blueprint and standards for environmentally responsible, high performance homes that lower costs for occupants and appreciate in value. It was created by members of the American Institute of Architects Committee on the Environment, Home Builders Association of Southern Tennessee, green|spaces and the Chattanooga Association of Realtors.

“Better Built is an invaluable tool for home builders and homeowners alike,” said Ethan Collier, President and CEO of Collier Construction. “For Collier Construction, the program is a practical way to ensure environmental responsibility and higher quality to our customers.”

CNE President and CEO David Johnson said, “Adhering to the Better Built standards ensures added value for CNE’s homebuyers through reduced energy costs. We are delighted to work with Better Built to build value for homes in Chattanooga while reducing the environmental impact.”

Steve Birger added, “The true quality and value of any home is well beneath the surface of the shingles, paint and brick. Better Built Certification is tangible assurance to purchasers of our homes that a series of energy efficiency, moisture management, and sustainable building practices have been implemented as well as inspected and rated by an independent agency.”

The group has also launched an introductory video online. The video helps define the program and spotlights the benefits and effectiveness of sustainable building. Chattanooga homebuyers and builders can learn more about the program online at betterbuiltchattanooga.org.
