ALWAYS BRANDO, the feature film written and directed by acclaimed Tunisian filmmaker Ridha Behi, has been selected to premiere at The 2011 Toronto International Film Festival, world renown as the launching pad for the best of International, Hollywood and Canadian cinema and recognized as the most important film festival after Cannes.
ALWAYS BRANDO: The serenity of a remote Tunisian village is corrupted when an American film crew invades its neighborhoods, bringing greed and betrayal that devastates the innocent inhabitants. Anis, a young Tunisian villager with an uncanny resemblance to Marlon Brando, is seduced by false promises of stardom, wealth, and fame, and the impossible dream of making it big in Hollywood.
In March 2004 Ridha Behi meets with Marlon Brando at Brando's home on Mulholland Drive and tells him of his desire to make a film inspired by the legendary actor. Deathly ill but always Brando, the eighty-year-old is enthralled with Behi's story and agrees to collaborate with him in what he knows will be his very last feature film.
Brando and Behi work together on every aspect of the original production. Brando adds his unique perspective to the screenplay and ultimately decides to perform a role in the film he feels will be the crowning achievement of his career - playing himself, Marlon Brando. The movie, then titled "Brando and Brando", is announced at the 2004 Cannes Film Festival.
But months later Brando's health fails. He dies. And Brando and Behi’s production comes to an abrupt halt. Over the ensuing years Behi continues to receive queries from international news organizations about his collaboration with Brando and correspondence from around the world urging him to persevere. Behi re-conceives and re-writes the screenplay into a meditation on his journey with Brando, weaving documentary footage and scenes from Brando's vast film archive within a fictional narrative that finally brings their vision to completion.
