Berlin, Germany (PRWEB) August 22, 2011

The International Standards Organization published PDF/A-2 in June 2011. It provides extended functions for long-term archiving of PDF documents. The previous part of the standard, PDF/A-1 is based on PDF version 1.4, while PDF/A-2 is based on version 1.7, now standardized as ISO 32000. New functionality includes high performance JPEG2000 compression, support for transparency effects and levels, embedding of OpenType fonts and applying digital signatures in accordance with PDF Advanced Electronic Signatures (PADeS) specifications. PDF/A files can also be embedded in PDF/A-2, allowing groups of documents to be archived as individual, but associated, documents.

The webinar series begins on September 1, 2011 with “PDF/A Update – Advantages of PDF/A-2”. From 3:00 pm to 4:00 pm CEST, PDF/A Competence Center member LuraTech Europe GmbH will provide a brief overview of the ISO standard PDF/A for long-term archiving and describe the new functions offered by PDF/A-2. The emphasis will be on functions for scanned documents. Those interested can visit https://www2.gotomeeting.com/register/952323739 to register free of charge for this webinar.

In this English-language webinar, he will give a detailed presentation on the technical innovations of PDF/A-2. The free registration link is: https://www2.gotomeeting.com/register/840552890.

The PDF/A Competence Center and some of its members will also be available to answer questions and will present on PDF/A-2 at the ARMA Show in Washington DC from October 17 to 19, 2011. There is also an updated list of regional events maintained at http://www.pdfa.org.

About PDF/A
ISO 19005 (PDF/A) defines requirements for documents suitable for archiving using the popular and ubiquitous PDF format. The International Standard for archive-ready PDF provides requirements and specifications that ensure the long-term readability and full-text search functionality of documents regardless of the application software and operating system in which they were originally produced. The advantages of PDF/A are such that only 5 years after ratification the Standard has already replaced TIFF as the preferred archiving format in numerous international governmental organizations and industries.

About the PDF/A Competence Center
The PDF/A Competence Center was established as an international association in 2006 to promote understanding and implementation of PDF/A. In less than three years, more than 100 companies and individual experts from over 20 countries joined as dues-paying members. The objective of the association is to promote the exchange of information and experience in the field of long-term archiving in accordance with ISO 19005 (PDF/A). The management board is comprised of executives from callas software GmbH, Compart AG, Crawford Technologies Inc., intarsys consulting GmbH and LuraTech Europe GmbH. The executive chairman is Olaf Drümmer, Managing Director of callas software GmbH. Duff Johnson, former CEO of Appligent Document Solutions Inc. is the executive vice chairman.
