According to a AAA Automotive survey released earlier this month, more than half of Americans are keeping their cars longer -- yet one in four Americans are neglecting car repair and maintenance due to the economy.

AAA Automotive experts said that neglecting maintenance and small repairs can result in much higher repair bills that many of those surveyed indicated they would not be able to pay. One-quarter of those surveyed said they would not be able to pay a repair bill of $2,000 or more; one in eight said they could not afford a repair bill of $1,000.

Half of those surveyed said they were holding on to their cars longer because they didn’t want the financial burden of a new car.
