United Domains, international domain registrar, announces that it will be offering .XXX domains, including defensive registrations for trademarks and brands, as one of the first registrars accredited by the ICM Registry.

In response to high demand for .XXX domains—over 18,000 requests for names—United Domains launched its early pre-registration program on August 22. As one of the first registrars accredited by the ICM Registry, the company has been planning for the .XXX launch since early this year. To date, hundreds of names have been ordered in anticipation of the .XXX launch.

About .XXX Domains

.XXX domains are specifically designated for adult content websites, including sites that offer products and services to the adult industry. However, trademark holders and other brands will be able to protect their names by registering them defensively—so that the domains do not resolve to a site, but remain blank.

The launch of .XXX begins with the Sunrise periods--early registration times set aside specifically for trademark and current domain owners to give them a first opportunity at securing domains for their protected names. After the Sunrise period closes, there is a Landrush period, open to investors wanting to build adult sites and giving them early access to premium names. Finally, in the last stage of the launch, on December 6, 2011, .XXX domains enter General Availability.

Registration Periods

United Domains will be offering .XXX domain registration through all three Sunrise periods as well as the Landrush and General Availability periods.

Sunrise AT (Trademark Domains)

  •     Recommended for: Trademark holders who want to register their trademarks as working .XXX domains
  •     Timeframe: September 7 - October 28
  •     Price: $199 + $79 annual registration fee

Sunrise AD (Grandfathered Domains)

  •     Recommended for: Domain owners who want to grandfather matching names in other top level domains (e.g. .com, .net, .org) into .xxx domains
  •     Timeframe: September 7 - October 28
  •     Price: $199 + $79 annual registration fee

Sunrise B (Blocked Domains)

  •     Recommended for: Trademark owners who want to block their trademarks in the .XXX domain
  •     Timeframe: September 7 - October 28
  •     Price: $299

Landrush (Domain Auction)

  •     Recommended for: Adult site developers who want to register .XXX domains earlier than General Availability
  •     Timeframe: November 8 - November 25
  •     Price: $99 + $79 annual registration fee

General Availability (Live Registration)

  •     Recommended for: Adult site developers or individuals and companies who want to block their name in the .XXX domain
  •     Timeframe: Starts December 6
  •     Price: $79 annual registration fee

For companies concerned with protecting their brand names and trademarks, United Domains recommends registering a blocked .XXX domain. This will prevent anyone from using a company’s name to promote adult content on this domain extension.
