With a design inspired by the cross unearthed by emergency crews at the disaster site in Lower Manhattan, the 9/11 Remembrance Rosary helps call to mind the importance of asking for Christ’s help through the intercession of his mother in times of tragedy and violent upheaval. This distinctive Rosary is meant to help individuals cope with the sadness and fear those events have stirred, becoming a sign of hope for all in the midst of the helplessness felt in the face of global terrorism.
The task of designing and producing a rosary of such importance could only be undertaken by renowned Ghirelli Rosaries, known for their fine-art contributions to the craft of custom rosary making for such partners as the Holy See, the Vatican State, the Vatican Museums, the Cathedral of Notre Dame de Paris, and many other distinguished customers.
“This Rosary is like Our Lady’s spiritual weapon,” said Father Andrew Apostoli of EWTN Global Catholic Television Network, “to build the wonderful Culture of Life and destroy the sad Culture of Death with its war, terrorism and all its attacks on the God-given gift of human life.”
Traditional rosaries are made of three parts: the cross, the beads, and the centerpiece. The 9/11 Remembrance Rosary is comprised of these, but inspired by the cross of steel beams that remained in the rubble at Ground Zero — and the coincidence of the 50 states of the United States of America with the number of the Hail Mary beads in the five decades of the rosary. The antiphon Hail Mary beads are engraved with the three letters USA. The sculpture of Jesus is the heart of the work, its message inspired by the Resurrection and suggested by the piece of sheet metal hanging off it which resembles the shroud left by Jesus.
