BioPlus’ New Nursing Program Helps Hepatitis C Patients and Their Physicians

One-on-one nursing training and office assistance from a nurse administrator to expedite the start of treatment is now available to hepatitis C patients and prescribers through BioPlus, a leading specialty pharmacy.

BioPlus Specialty Pharmacy (BioPlus), one of the nation’s leading specialty pharmacies, is announcing today the national roll out of a nursing program supporting the complex therapy needed for the treatment of the hepatitis C virus (HCV) that was test piloted in May. The BioPlus nursing program provides one-on-one patient training with a nurse about how to inject HCV medications and, for physicians, the program offers Nurse Administration assistance for offices that require assistance with a high volume of new HCV patients. These services are provided nationally to all BioPlus HCV prescribers and patients.

This new BioPlus nursing program has two main components:

1. For patients who require injection training for HCV drugs, this program provides hands-on injection training with a BioPlus nurse either in the patient’s home or at the physician’s office so that patients feel comfortable and confident administering their own medication injections.

2. For physicians, the nursing program provides administrative help in handling the complex paperwork for starting HCV therapy. A BioPlus nurse will visit the physician’s office and assist with the processing of paperwork so that the start of HCV treatment for their patients can be expedited. Many physicians are currently facing a large volume of new patients that require assistance in tracking and starting treatment as a result of two new HCV drugs -- Victrelis (boceprevir) and Incivek (telaprevir) -- that recently gained FDA approval. This BioPlus nurse administration service can assist in processing the necessary paperwork through our pharmacy for benefit investigation, assistance in submitting paperwork for prior authorizations, and locating financial assistance, if needed.

“With the new HCV treatment options of Victrelis and Incivek, HCV patients and their prescribing physician have a wonderful opportunity to see greater treatment success against this disease; however, there are some hurdles in this process,” says Sharon Ferrer, Director of Pharmaceutical Contracting at BioPlus. “Here at BioPlus we can help patients and physicians overcome these hurdles by providing hands-on patient training and taking some of the administration burden away from busy physician offices.”

The high-touch, patient-centric philosophy at BioPlus results in higher-than-average treatment outcomes. The latest compliance statistics from a sampling of the treatment programs at BioPlus, which includes more than 19,700 patients being treated for HCV, oncology, rheumatoid arthritis, psoriasis, Crohn’s disease, and other conditions, shows that BioPlus achieves a 91 percent compliance rate at discharge. By comparison, the compliance rate for retail and mail-order pharmacies is only 50 percent.
