Somerville, New Jersey Attorney Carl A. Taylor III recently left a job with a law firm to, on his 28th birthday, open his own law practice.

The sentiment of the times is that, “You’re lucky to have a job.” And if one is so fortunate as to have steady work, that they guard it with their life. Twenty-eight year old local attorney, Carl A. Taylor III was so lucky. But deep down, Taylor knew he had to follow his life-long dream of owning his own law practice. But what to do during these uncertain economic times? Does one throw away a viable career working for an established law firm? Does one throw caution to the wind and risk it all on a dream? For Carl Taylor III, the answer is a resounding yes!

“I’ve always wanted to have my own law practice,” Taylor says. “It’s something I’ve dreamed of since I was a kid. After years and years of college, law school, and following law school, clerking for a Somerset County Superior Court Judge and then working for a year at a local law firm, I knew it was time to go out on my own.” And so he did.

September 2nd marked not only Carl’s twenty-eighth birthday, but also the official start date of his new firm: The Law Office of Carl A. Taylor III. The firm is located in downtown Somerville, across from the County Courthouse.

Are there risks? Of course, especially in today’s economy. But Taylor is more than up to the challenge having planned for this move for as long as he can remember.

“Starting a law firm is not something you do without an intense of amount of thought and planning,” he says. “There are so many factors to consider including location, competition, office space, utilities, staffing, the economy, and most importantly, your clients. Everything needs to be well thought out before going out on your own. I’ve been fortunate to work with some of the brightest legal minds in the region and I’ve learned important lessons from each of them over the years. Today, I’m putting all of that knowledge to work for my own clients.”

Taylor says the key to success is providing outstanding legal services to clients. His firm also places an emphasis on implementing modern technology.

"I’ve embraced technology throughout my practice to help streamline processes and reduce costs. One example of how I’m harnessing technology is our website where we will actively maintain a law blog that will serve as a free resource to the public on issues ranging from New Jersey divorces, domestic violence, municipal court and traffic court issues, and other legal matters."

Taylor has already learned first-hand that following your dreams isn’t always easy. He’s already invested nearly $5,000 of he and his wife’s money into the venture. He is currently the firm’s only employee. As such, he knows the success of the firm is entirely up to him.

“Although I took a big risk, I can’t see myself ever regretting it,” he says. “Once I was certain my wife was on board, I knew this was the time to go for it. It’s an exciting opportunity and I get to practice law in a community in which I have so many ties. Best of all, I get to pick and choose my cases; and most importantly, I get to help clients who I believe have the greatest need for my assistance.”
