Phil Cannella, creator and host of the popular, financially themed radio show, is committed to providing “crash-proof hope” to young CHOP patients at the once-a-year charitable event.

On Friday, September 9 and Saturday, September 10, the Crash Proof Retirement team once again will be an integral part of the annual 98.1 WOGL Loves Our Kids Radiothon. Now in its 10th year, the Radiothon is presented jointly by WOGL and Children’s Miracle Network, and since 2001 has raised over $4 million for patients at The Children’s Hospital of Philadelphia (CHOP).

The charitable event runs from 6 a.m. -7 p.m. on Friday and from 9 a.m.-7 p.m. on Saturday at the hospital itself. On-air personalities from WOGL, in addition to athletes and other local celebrities, work the phones and take pledges from callers.

The cohosts of The Crash Proof Retirement Show™, Phil Cannella and Joann Small, will anchor the all-important final two hours of the show, from 5-7pm Saturday. Cannella and Small, respectively the CEO and Executive Vice President of First Senior Financial Group, will broadcast live from CHOP’s Colket Atrium, the event’s central venue, soliciting donations from fans of their own popular talk show and other listeners as well.

Many First Senior Financial Group employees participate in the Radiothon. The company also will provide arts-and-crafts to the hospital’s young patients.

Last year’s event was a huge success, raising over $492,000. On behalf of their company, Cannella and Small contributed a check for $50,000—the largest single donation in the history of the fundraiser. In addition, Cannella and Small sponsored two “power hours” for a total contribution of over $56,000. A power hour is a stepped-up, intensely goal-oriented charitable outreach in which Radiothon DJ’s attempt to hit a predetermined donations target.

“We plan to be a key financial presence this year too,” says Cannella. “When you give a child hope, you give a child a future. And that’s like a boomerang: It comes back to your soul and enlarges it. If we can ‘crash proof’ the way they look at life right now, it’s the best gift of all.”

Small adds, “We did our first Radiothon last year and were incredibly touched by the courage you see in the faces of these beautiful children. Even though there’s an obvious element of sadness to the situation, as a mother and grandmother you can’t help but be moved by being around these kids.”

This past March, Cannella and Small brought a car full of toys to be distributed to patients. “We had originally thought about doing it for Christmas,” says Cannella, “but the kids already get a ton of toys at Christmas. Instead we thought it might be nice to wait till the dust settles and make it more special for them after the holiday glow subsides.”

The Children’s Hospital of Philadelphia, America's first hospital dedicated exclusively to the care of children, is a world leader in patient care, cutting-edge research, advocacy for children and education for pediatric healthcare professionals.

First Senior Financial Group specializes in educating retirees and other seniors about ways to “crash proof” their retirement by achieving asset protection and inflation-beating growth without market risk or market fees. Cannella helped pioneer long-term care insurance in the 1970s. He conceived The Crash Proof Retirement Show™ nearly three years ago, as a direct response to the stock-market crash of 2008. The show airs Saturdays in two time slots, 8-9am on WNTP 990AM and 11am-1pm on Talk-Radio 1210AM. It also airs on select Sundays.
