Shrader & Associates, a leading national law firm dedicated to helping individuals harmed by toxic chemicals, is committed to keeping current with the research surrounding mesothelioma. In line with that interest, the firm is investigating a study published Sunday that found a genetic mutation that may make some people more susceptible to develop mesothelioma.
Cancer specialists at The University of Hawaii and Fox Chase in Philadelphia followed two families with histories of mesothelioma for 14 years to discover a genetic link that might help prevention and early detection of the deadly cancer. The study found that every family member who developed mesothelioma had the same gene mutation.
"Many million people are exposed to carcinogenic fibers like asbestos. Fortunately, only few of them ever develop cancer," Michele Carbone, MD, UH Cancer Center director, said. "The question is why is that some people are more susceptible than others."
Mesothelioma, an aggressive cancer that develops in the lining of the lungs, is caused by exposure to asbestos dust. Once used in many kinds of construction, asbestos is now restricted in the United States, said firm partner Ross Stomel. Still, many products and buildings contain asbestos and removal is dangerous and expensive, he said.
“At Shrader & Associates, we believe in positioning ourselves as a resource for mesothelioma patients and their families,” Stomel said. “Keeping up-to-date with information about diseases our clients deal with is another way to make sure we are giving them the best advice and legal support.”
The findings could also be useful during the long latency period after the disease is contracted. While there is currently no cure for mesothelioma, more treatment options are available to a patient if the cancer is detected early, Stomel said.
