A study from the Minnesota Department of Health found alarming rates of mortality from diabetes and stroke in the central region of the state. Their focus should now be on physical activity and dietary patterns in the region.

As a nation less than 4% of our annual health care budget is directed towards prevention. We don’t need more health care, we need more care about health.

A recent study conducted by the Minnesota Department of Health spotlighted the central area of the state afflicted with the highest rates of diabetes and stroke. Walking 10,000 steps per day would dramatically alter the health landscape of individuals in this region. TrekDesk Treadmill Desks assists in allowing individuals to walk while they work regardless of weather conditions, requiring no additional time out of the day.

The study was met with surprise by leaders of the area medical community. “We’re fortunate we do have a fair of number of providers; we don’t have excessive distances for people to travel ... so I find that (report) a little bit puzzling,” stated Dr. Christopher Wenner, a local physician and area medical society member, in an interview with SC Times.

“Rising rates of chronic disease are more often related to increased levels of physical inactivity and poor diet,” stated Steve Bordley, CEO of TrekDesk Treadmill Desks, “not poor access to health care. We seem to have the health model backwards in this country. It would be more beneficial to study the activity and dietary patterns of this region of the state.”

As a nation less than 4% of our annual health care budget is directed towards prevention. We don’t need more health care, we need more care about health. The combination of 10,000 steps per day and a healthy lifestyle has been shown to lower the risk of diabetes by 50% (source: ADA) and stroke by 70% (AHA).

The Central Region of Minnesota is comprised of the following counties: Benton, Chisago, Isanti, Kanabec, Kandiyohi, McLeod, Meeker, Mille Lacs, Pine, Renville, Sherburne, Stearns and Wright.
