Pearson, the global leader in learning technology and services, today announced that New Haven Public Schools in Connecticut have selected PowerSchool as their new web-based student information system (SIS). PowerSchool will serve New Haven’s more than 20,000 students.
“We received very positive feedback concerning PowerSchool from our focus group during the decision process,” said Frank Gentile, Information Technology Director for New Haven Public Schools. “Since this focus group was made up of teachers, staff, and administrators, we feel that the reception during implementation will be positive.”
PowerSchool will serve as the information backbone for New Haven Public Schools. Through its robust set of communication tools, PowerSchool will provide access to secure, real-time student information through a web browser. The parent portal facilitates interactive dialogue between parents, students, and teachers. Additional features, such as master scheduling and reporting tools, will lend substantial efficiencies to the district.
“We expect that providing an easy to use and secure system to staff and teachers—which will enable them to enter grades, track/enter attendance, and look up student data—can only result in a positive reception,” Gentile said.
Among the factors that led to the PowerSchool purchase, Gentile continued, were its already well-established user base throughout Connecticut, familiarity with state reporting requirements, graphical interface, and rich feature list.
Other Connecticut users of PowerSchool include the Connecticut Technical High School System as well as school districts in Hartford, Meriden, Glastonbury, and Southington.
“The price point Pearson offered, in light of the feature set and already existing synergies with Schoolnet, Pearson’s instructional management solution, was simply the best value,” Gentile said.
Aster Laleman, Strategic Accounts Manager for the School Systems group of Pearson, agreed with Gentile adding, “In selecting PowerSchool as their SIS, New Haven is also gaining access to vast learning resources that Pearson offers. For example, with Pearson’s recent acquisition of Schoolnet, New Haven now has the opportunity to seamlessly extend PowerSchool’s SIS capabilities with the proven Schoolnet instructional improvement solution that already uses data to boost learning for more than 5 million students in schools nationwide.
“We are excited to work with New Haven to identify ways PowerSchool can springboard further achievement of New Haven’s education goals,” said Laleman.
New Haven Public Schools expects to go live with PowerSchool throughout the district by the beginning of the 2012-2013 school year.
