Phillip Gay has joined Envision Telepharmacy, LLC as its first Chief Technical Officer in response to a growing product pipeline.

Envision Telepharmacy CEO Emily Alexander, PharmD, BCPS, announced today that Phillip Gay has joined the company as its first Chief Technology Officer. Gay will be responsible for both product development and technical support. Envision will continue to have a separate team focused on service-delivery operations under the direction of Becky Harvey, PharmD, VP- Education, and the recently appointed Telepharmacy Operations Manager Becky Barr.

Alexander stated, “The creation of the CTO position marks Envision’s rapid growth from a service-based telepharmacy company delivering electronic supervision and remote medication-order management services into an integrated supplier of both telepharmacy services and pharmacy workflow management products.

“Our product strategy over the last few years has been centered on developing telepharmacy deployment options for health-system Directors of Pharmacy. Today, our customers can use Envision’s traditional telepharmacy services delivered by remotely located Envision pharmacists; they can build their own telepharmacy within their own health care organization and staff it with their own pharmacists; they can deploy a combination of the two that best fits their situation. With our product strategy in place and Gay on board I am looking forward to dedicating more time to overseeing Envision’s move into new practice settings.”

Previously, Gay was with SunGard Higher Education TMS, where he was Director, Enterprise Application Development responsible for maintaining and upgrading Sul Ross State University’s enterprise resource planning solution. Prior to his work at SunGard, Gay held various software development, project leadership and product management positions in the financial services industry.

The creation of the CTO position is also part of a larger undertaking that promises to shorten Envision’s product release cycle such that new products, features and functionality will come to market faster and be more responsive to customer feedback and emerging market opportunities.

Gay elaborated on this point, saying, “The last release of Envision’s pharmacy workflow software Pharm-Q™ Version 3.0 was under development for 3 years. It delivered a significant number of new features including encrypted instant messaging, order preview (via hover) and nursing station status displays, as well as enhanced functionality for search, reporting and context-driven help.

“While Envision’s customers greeted Version 3.0 enthusiastically, it is obvious that the next suite of products and enhancements needed to get to market much faster. The downside to a large, robust release like Pharm Q Version 3.0 is that the entire package of new features and functionalities can be held up by a single dependent element. In the future we will ring-fence all new products, features and functionality improvements such that they can be ready for market independently of each other.” This product development principle will also take better advantage of Envision’s web-based solution approach, allowing new products and improved features to be launched without requiring new software be delivered, loaded and periodically updated and maintained on customers’ local servers.

Some of the applications in Envision’s product channel that will take advantage of this new development cycle include encrypted audiovisual communication solutions to enable remote patient / pharmacist consultation, visual barcode recognition within high-definition images, and porting existing solutions to new mobile platforms.
