Rochester, New York (PRWEB) September 07, 2011
In response to the increased diagnosis rate across the country of Celiac Disease and people who suffer from Gluten sensitivity, Mark’s Pizzeria, with over 40 locations in New York and Florida, has decided to offer its customers a gluten-free pizza option as part of its menu offerings. This menu addition has made Mark’s Pizzeria the first pizza chain of its kind and size to offer such a product in the markets they operate in.
There has been an overwhelming amount of information released through local and national media sources that have brought to light the fact that over three million Americans from all races, ages and gender suffer from Celiac Disease in the United States. Not only that, but the National Foundation for Celiac Awareness has estimated that 95% of patients with a Gluten Sensitive condition are misdiagnosed with other conditions and Celiac disease can lead to a number of other disorders including infertility, reduced bone density, neurological disorders, some cancers, and other autoimmune diseases.
Seeing that a strict gluten-free diet is the only known treatment for the condition made the decision to “Go Gluten-Free” an easy one for Mark Crane, President of Mark’s Pizzeria.
“We’re really excited to be able to offer a Gluten-free Pizza to our customers” said Crane. “For some families affected by Celiac Disease who live in the neighborhoods we operate in, a pizza night was out of the question due to the fact that there are few pizza restaurant or delivery options that offer gluten-free. There’s something special about sitting down with your whole family and eating pizza together and laughing and sharing stories together…the fact that some families couldn’t do that just didn't seem right to me, so we added Gluten-free to our menu as another option for those families. If by adding gluten-free pizza, we make just one family happy…that’s worth it for us.”
After months of product testing and official certification to ensure they could deliver certified Gluten-free pizza dough, Mark’s Pizzeria launched Gluten-free pizza to much fan fare on September 3rd of this year.
About Celiac Disease:
Celiac (SEE-lee-ak) disease is a digestive condition triggered by consumption of the protein gluten, which is primarily found in bread, pasta, cookies, pizza crust and many other foods containing wheat, barley or rye. People with celiac disease who eat foods containing gluten experience an immune reaction in their small intestines, causing damage to the inner surface of the small intestine and an inability to absorb certain nutrients.
Celiac disease can cause abdominal pain and diarrhea. Eventually, the decreased absorption of nutrients (malabsorption) that occurs with celiac disease can cause vitamin deficiencies that deprive your brain, peripheral nervous system, bones, liver and other organs of vital nourishment.
No treatment can cure celiac disease. However, you can effectively manage celiac disease by changing your diet.
