Pepperdine University will host a special 9/11 remembrance amid a breathtaking display of 2,977 flags honoring those who died in the terrorist attacks 10 years ago.

Note: all of the events listed below are free and open to the public.

Where/When:

11 a.m. - 3 p.m.: Remembering the Fallen: A Reading of the Victims’ Names
Pepperdine University, Alumni Park, 24255 PCH, Malibu, CA 90263

1 p.m.- 2:45 p.m.: Film screening of United 93. Actor Christian Clemenson, who portrayed TomBurnett, a Pepperdine alumnus and one of the heroes who fought back against the terrorists, will be on hand to discuss the film.

4 p.m. – 5 p.m.: Honoring the Heroes of 9/11: A 10thAnniversary Remembrance Program. Deena Burnett-Bailey, widow of victim Tom Burnett will speak along with former California Governor Gray Davis, L.A. County Supervisor, Zev Yaroslavsky, and Pepperdine President Andrew K. Benton.

All day (except from 2 to 2:30 p.m. for a private ceremony): Heroes Garden will be open to the public.
Located on the Drescher Graduate Campus of Pepperdine, 24255 PCH, Malibu, CA 90263

The Heroes Garden, situated on a hillside overlooking Pepperdine’s lower campus and the Pacific Ocean, was created to honor the memory of Americans who lost their lives to terrorists on 9-11, including, Tom Burnett, alumnus of the Graziadio School of Business and Management at Pepperdine.

Who:

  • Zev Yaroslavsky, LA County Supervisor, and Gray Davis, former Governor of California, will offer personal perspectives at the remembrance event at 4 p.m.
  • Key community members, leaders and volunteers from service, charitable, religious, and professional organizations will join members of the Pepperdine community in reading of the names of the fallen.
  • Deena Burnett-Bailey whose husband, Pepperdine alumnus Thomas E. Burnett, Jr., was one of the heroes who perished on Flight 93 in Pennsylvania, will give remarks at the private memorial service.
