Law Department Desktop Services, LLC (“LDDS”), in partnership with the Canam Steel Corporation-U.S. (“CANAM”), is proud to announce a joint project to implement LDDS’ Law Department Efficiency Desktop (the “Desktop’) for CANAM’s U.S. legal and human resources team.

Offered as Software-as-a-Service (or ‘Cloud-based’), the Desktop is a law department management application that will provide a centralized communication facility and work product repository for CANAM’s in-house legal team and preferred outside counsel and suppliers. The Desktop promotes use of best practices, collaboration and strong working relationships among in-house team members and outside providers.

The project is part of the groundbreaking “Managing Litigation as a Business” initiative, a nationwide endeavor to help corporate law departments provide greater value to their clients by managing legal services more efficiently and effectively to achieve better results at lower costs. Ron Peppe, CANAM’s Vice President of Legal and Human Resources, heads a small law department dealing with numerous law firms in managing the company’s legal work across the U.S. According to Peppe, “It’s critically important that our in-house team and outside counsel have timely access to the most current information about our legal matters. The Desktop will help us solve this problem without requiring a large commitment of time and resources from our in-house IT staff.” Implementing the system is easy and efficient. “As a small law department, we need to be highly organized, both internally and in our work with outside counsel. The Desktop will help us get our arms around the litigation we're involved in by keeping everything in one place. Bottom line, the Desktop is going to make my job as GC a lot easier," said Peppe.

LDDS levels the technology playing field for corporate law departments. The Desktop provides a sophisticated law department intranet / extranet that facilitates: efficient communication and collaboration among uses; standardization of processes; and centralized knowledge, work product and supply chain management. The Cloud-based application runs on a Microsoft Sharepoint Services™ 2010 platform and is hosted by Rackspace.

Leaders of law departments of all sizes are under mounting pressure from corporate management to improve operational efficiencies, reduce costs and gain more value for their internal and external legal spend. Using state-of-the-art technology is an important key in improving efficiency and managing relationships with preferred outside counsel and suppliers. LDDS President, Forrest Morgan, notes: “The Desktop was designed ‘by in-house lawyers for in-house lawyers.’ It addresses and serves the specific needs of corporate law departments.
