TheTeaParty.net renewed today its call for Congress to support the Postal Reform Act in light of the Post Master General's claim that the United States Postal Service may close its doors this winter due to mounting debt. "We are trying to protect postal workers and their retirement accounts by enacting much-needed reforms to streamline the post office. Opponents of the Postal Reform Act would rather raid the retirement accounts of postal workers simply to resist change," said Dustin Stockton, Media Director for TheTeaParty.net.

TheTeaParty.net renewed today its call for Congress to support the Postal Reform Act in light of the Post Master General's claim that the United States Postal Service may close its doors this winter due to mounting debt.

The USPS runs an annual deficit of more than $8 billion, and TheTeaParty.net has engaged thousands of supporters in a grassroots effort to urge Congress to address this shortfall and support the Postal Reform Act(H.R. 2309). Members of the organization have sent over 160,000 letters to Washington urging support for the bill, with California signers leading the way at 15,785 petitions, followed by Texas signers at 15,550 and Florida at 15,312.

"Congressman Issa's Postal Reform Act is the only solution to the post office's chronic budget problems," said Dustin Stockton, media director for TheTeaParty.net. "This country relies on the mail to get business done, and sweeping changes are necessary to make sure people continue to receive their mail."

The Postal Reform Act would make changes to ease pressures on the USPS, including allowing for flexible delivery schedules, eliminating the discounts enjoyed by political parties, and reworking the compensation structure for postal workers to bring it in line with the private sector.

In contrast, opponents of the bill, like Sen. Tom Carper (D-DE), are supporting competing legislation, called the Postal Operations Sustainment and Transformation Act, which would use the agency's retirement fund as a stopgap for this year's budget shortfall. Carper says the affected public employee unions support this measure.

"Once again, we have a public employees union working against its members to favor union leadership," said Stockton. "We are trying to protect postal workers and their retirement accounts by enacting much-needed reforms to streamline the post office. Opponents of the Postal Reform Act would rather raid the retirement accounts of postal workers simply to resist change."
