Gumiyo Mobile, a leading software-as-a-service (SaaS) provider of mobile publishing solutions to the newspaper industry, announced today that a number of its newspaper customers on the East Coast saw up to a 300 percent or more increase in mobile traffic to their respective news websites over the weekend of August 27 as a result of Hurricane Irene. In fact, Gumiyo's data showed particularly marked spikes in both page views and unique visitors on Sunday, August 28 when the effects of the crisis were most pronounced. Fortunately, Gumiyo's cloud-based platform, with built-in redundancy and robust architecture, helped ensure that communities affected by the hurricane were able to get the news and information necessary to make informed decisions.

"Clearly, it was the reporters, editors and other staff at these publications that did the 'heavy lifting' during the crisis, but we are proud to have played a part by facilitating their service to communities affected by Hurricane Irene," states Shuki Lehavi, CEO of Gumiyo. "As a member of the mobile app industry, I feel that this is a success for all of us who provide mobile services, and it is a testament to the impact that these services have on our lives."

With flooding and power failures, people turned to whatever media channels were available, especially their mobile devices to get the latest developments. According to Mr. Lehavi, "The reach of mobile news outlets proved their value by ensuring that people could access critical and timely information wherever they were when access to television and computers was limited or not available. In this light, we endeavor to ensure that our mobile publishing platform will always meet this need."
